iced vanilla bean matcha latte

What can I say? I love my morning caffeine. Whether it’s cold brew, an iced horchata latte or this vanilla bean iced matcha latte, I require caffeine to get my day started.

I first fell in love with matcha during pregnancy because I couldn’t stand the taste of coffee but still wanted caffeine. Green tea, specifically matcha, has less caffeine than coffee, but more than other teas, which is why I find it to be a good alternative.

Recipe features

  • Instead of using traditional simple syrup, it uses a mix of maple syrup and vanilla bean paste for extra flavor.
  • Can be made in a blender so you’re morning caffeine is ready in under 2 minutes!
  • Perfect as an afternoon pick-me-up when you want something, but not too much caffeine.

Ingredients

Matcha powder – High-quality, ceremonial grade matcha is the way to go. Similar to coffee, there are many different brands of matcha, so if you’re new to matcha, you may need to try a few before finding your favorite.

Vanilla bean paste – This is the key ingredient to take this recipe from good to great.

Maple syrup – I prefer maple syrup over honey as my sweetener, but either one works. I always recommend starting with less and increasing to taste.

Milk – Any kind words! I used whole milk, but oat milk or almond milk would be delicious too.

Instructions

There are two ways you can make this latte, but let’s go over my favorite way, aka the easier way.

Step 1: Add ingredients to blender. Pour milk into a blender, then add the matcha, maple syrup and vanilla bean paste.

Step 2: Blend. Blend for 10-15 seconds. Fill a glass with ice, then pour matcha latte over top. Enjoy!

Alternate method

Step 1: Whisk wet ingredients. Add matcha to a small bowl, then pour about 2 tablespoons of hot water over it and whisk to combine, preferably with a bamboo whisk if you have one. Add the maple syrup and vanilla bean paste and whisk again.

Step 2: Add ice and milk. Fill a glass with ice, then pour milk over it so that the glass is filled 3/4 of the way with milk. Pour the matcha mixture over the milk and enjoy!

Tips

  • If you’re caffeine-sensitive, stick to one teaspoon, but otherwise I suggest using two.
  • Try out different kinds of milk to see what you like best. I tend to opt for oat milk or whole milk, but cashew milk, almond milk or even coconut milk are great options.
  • If you’re making a hot latte, I highly suggest getting a milk frother so that the milk is similar to what you’d get at a coffee shop.

My Pro Tip

Recipe Tip

Most matcha brands suggest 1 teaspoon as the serving size. However, I almost always use two teaspoons because I like the taste better, and appreciate the additional caffeine 🙂

What is matcha?

Matcha is ground up green tea leaves. They dissolve when mixed with hot water, or in this case, in a blender. Most matcha comes from Japan, but there are so many different kinds with varying taste (just like coffee!), so you’ll need to find the brand that you enjoy best.

Can this be a hot latte instead?

Yes! To do so, add one or two teaspoons of matcha to a small dish, then pour a small amount of hot water overtop and whisk to combine. Add milk, maple syrup and vanilla bean paste to a cup and froth the milk to your liking. Pour the matcha into a mug, followed by the warmed milk and enjoy!
