Forget everything you know about savory salsas like tomato salsa, guacamole salsa, and corn salsa because this fruit salsa recipe is a delicious departure from the norm.

Picture a colorful medley of Granny Smith apples, pineapple, kiwi, blueberries, and strawberries tossed with lemon, sugar, and fruit preserves. The fruity mix is perfectly balanced and has a great natural sweetness, which only gets better when it’s served with cinnamon chips or graham crackers.

You can’t go wrong serving this homemade fruit salsa as a refreshing summer snack or on top of your morning yogurt or microwave oatmeal. It always hits the spot!

Recipe features

  • It’s a perfect summer snack and a fun way to eat your daily dose of fresh fruits!
  • Mix and match the fruits to suit your taste buds or add savory mix-ins to play with the flavors.
  • This salsa isn’t just for dipping! Spoon it over savory grilled meats, ice cream, yogurt, oatmeal, and more.

Fruit Salsa Ingredients

Apples – I love the tartness and refreshing crunch Granny Smith apples add to this salsa. You can also use diced Fuji, Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, or Gala apples for a slightly different flavor.

Berries – Fresh strawberries and blueberries were my berries of choice, but you can also experiment with raspberries, blackberries, or cherries.

Tropical fruit – A blend of diced kiwi and pineapple gives the salsa sweet and juicy tropical flavors.

Sugar – A touch of sugar helps balance the tartness of the fruit. Granulated white sugar or cane sugar both work well, or you can experiment with a natural sweetener, like honey, maple syrup, agave nectar, or stevia.

Lemon – Freshly squeezed lemon juice brightens the salsa and helps prevent the fruits from browning.

Fruit preserves – Choose sweet preserves, such as strawberry or raspberry, to add an extra layer of flavor and help bind the ingredients together.

Cinnamon pita chips – Serve the delicious fruit salsa with store-bought or homemade cinnamon sugar chips (learn how to make them below!) or graham crackers.

Erin’s Expert Tips

  • Fresh citrus juice is a must because its acidity balances the tart and sweet flavors and prevents the fruits from browning. You can make this recipe with lemon, lime, or orange juice.
  • Chill the salsa in the fridge for at least 15 minutes before serving. This makes it even more refreshing on a hot summer day and gives the flavors time to mingle and meld together.

My Pro Tip

Recipe Tip

Dice the fruit into small, bite-sized pieces so it’s easier to scoop and to make sure you get a little bit of everything in each bite.

Variations

  • Mix and match the fruits – Try adding mango, peaches, or different berries, or swap the kiwi for another tropical fruit like papaya. There are no rules!
  • Add fresh herbs – Finely chopped fresh mint, basil, or cilantro would add a refreshing touch.
  • Add lemon zest – It’ll give the salsa an extra burst of citrusy flavor!
  • For a savory/spicy version – Give the salsa a savory or spicy kick by stirring in diced red onion, bell peppers, cucumbers, jalapeños, or serrano peppers.

Serving suggestions

This fruity salsa is incredibly versatile! In addition to scooping up every bite with cinnamon pita chips and graham crackers, try it with delicious dippers like animal crackers, pretzel chips, rice cakes, or vanilla wafers.

You can also serve a scoop of the salsa over vanilla no churn ice cream or banana nice cream for dessert, or over Greek yogurt and lavender granola for a wholesome breakfast bowl.

And similar to my pineapple salsa, a scoop of the fruit salsa over savory main courses, like grilled chicken thighs or seared salmon with chipotle salsa, is a great way to add sweetness and color.

Fruit Salsa FAQs

How do you make homemade cinnamon chips?

Cinnamon sugar pita chips are easy to make from scratch! Simply brush pita bread or flour tortillas with melted butter, sprinkle cinnamon sugar on top, and bake them in the oven or air fryer at 350°F until crisp and golden brown.

Can I use frozen fruit?

Yes, you can use frozen fruit to make fruit salsa, but keep in mind that the texture will be slightly softer. Simply thaw the frozen fruits and drain any excess liquid before using them in the salsa.

Storage

Make ahead: You can assemble the salsa up to 1 day before serving. Just keep it in a covered bowl in the fridge until it’s time to eat.

Refrigerator: To keep leftover fruit salsa fresh and flavorful, store it in an airtight container in the fridge for 1 to 2 days.
