Savory Mashed Sweet Potatoes give traditional mashed potatoes a run for their money! They’re made with only four ingredients and are super creamy and Paleo+Whole30-approved.

Guess what? These savory mashed sweet potatoes are my NEW favorite way to make my favorite starchy vegetable. If you love traditional mashed potatoes, I have a feeling you’ll like this version even more!

If you didn’t already know, I have a mild obsession with sweet potatoes. I have a new so-called favorite way to make them on a weekly basis. One week it’s my vegan sweet potato pie, the next week it’s my flourless sweet potato brownies and then the following week it’s my microwave sweet potato.

This week I’m all about the mashed sweet potato. It’s creamy, made with only four ingredients and is a delicious side at dinnertime!

ingredients on a table

Ingredients

  • Sweet potatoes – 4 large, which should equal approximately 6 cups total
  • Ghee – can sub butter if not keeping these paleo/whole30
  • Garlic
  • Almond or coconut milk – can technically use any kind of milk

Have you tried ghee before? I must admit that it’s my go-to when roasting sweet potatoes, so I figured why not add it to mashed sweet potatoes, too? If you’ve never tried it, ghee is basically clarified butter, and it IS Paleo-friendly, which is another reason why I opted to use it in this recipe.

As for the milk, I used almond milk, but coconut works too. I tend to choose almond milk because coconut milk does have a slight coconut-y flavor to it, so just keep that in mind. If you’re strict Paleo, make sure to use almond milk with as few ingredients as possible (homemade is even better!).

How to make savory mashed sweet potatoes

First: Start by cooking the sweet potatoes in a saucepan over the stove. Yes, you can roast them if you prefer that method, but the stovetop method is faster so I typically go that route.

Next: Once you can easily pierce the sweet potatoes with a fork, drain the water, then use a potato masher to mash the potatoes for 10-20 seconds. I like to do this first to break down the potatoes, but not completely mash them.

Last: To get the potatoes to be creamy and smooth (the best potato texture!), add the ghee, garlic and milk and use an electric hand mixer to mix the potatoes for 20-30 seconds until they’re to your desired consistency.

Do a little taste test and add some salt and pepper and viola, you’ve got delicious, homemade mashed sweet potatoes!

Tips and FAQS

  • Want to make these vegan? Use vegan butter.
  • If you can’t find ghee, use grass-fed butter instead.
  • If you can find ghee, you can take these potatoes up a notch by using garlic-infused ghee (SO good)

Are these potatoes Whole30 compliant?

Yes! I wouldn’t recommend eating these every day while doing Whole30, but they are Whole30 compliant. Again, just make sure to use an almond milk with few ingredients, or stick with coconut milk. As far as ghee goes, I really like Bulletproof and Fourth and Heart.

Can I cook the sweet potatoes in the microwave instead?

As much as I love microwaving sweet potatoes, for this recipe, I recommend cooking them over the stovetop because they’ll retain more moisture that way, and result in a creamier texture. Microwaving them works, but you’ll have to add more milk/ghee to the end product.

How should I store leftovers?

Leftover potatoes should hold up in the refrigerator in an air-tight container for up to 4 days.

Even better with Ceylon cinnamon! I used less almond milk but my sweet potatoes weren’t exactly “large,” so no issue. I wanted to freeze some mashed sweet potato to use later, but I kept “tasting” it so much that there’s not much to freeze this round. I guess I’ll need to make another batch. (And I’m looking forward to it!)

Thanks so much for this option!

So happy you liked the potatoes, Danielle!

This recipe is not dairy free. Ghee is technically a dairy product. It is lactose free, but not dairy free.

    1. Marie says:

It’s not being advertised as a dairy free recipe. It’s advertised as mashed sweet potatoes that happen to be Whole 30 compliant. Ghee is okay on Whole 30. If you personally can’t have ghee then omit it.

      1. Caryn says:

It is advertised as dairy free “They’re made with only four ingredients, and are super creamy, dairy free” says it right in recipe description. Ghee is a dairy product. Those of us allergic to milk cannot have Ghee. Please correct your advertising.

Obviously, I know I can switch out the Ghee. However, it is false advertising.

      2. Erin says:

You’re right — my mistake. I just went in and deleted “dairy free”

I added about a tablespoon of jerk seasoning to these, and just a pinch of cayenne pepper. Delicious!

    1. Erin says:

      That sounds amazing!

I know mashed potatoes are usually considered a “side dish”, but I ate this entirely for dinner!
