This almost completely hands-off Slow Cooker BBQ Chicken recipe makes meal prep a breeze! Barbecue sauce-drenched chicken breasts are cooked low and slow in a crockpot to give you fall-apart tender chicken that’s perfect for sandwiches, salads, and more.

Why you’ll love this recipe!

Almost hands-off – This super simple recipe leaves the hard work to the slow cooker. Just set it, forget it, and return hours later to a flavorful, satisfying meal.

Juicy, flavorful chicken – Whether you go with chicken breasts or thighs, the slow cooker delivers tender, shredded chicken smothered in rich BBQ sauce every time.

Crowd-pleasing – Make this BBQ chicken recipe for meal prep, potlucks, or easy weekday meals. It’s perfect for sandwiches, salads, baked potatoes, and more!

I’m the type of person who will make shredded BBQ chicken any chance I get. To me, it’s the perfect meal prep protein! It’s juicy, packed with smoky flavors I love, and easy to cook in a variety of ways.

This Slow Cooker BBQ Chicken recipe is a lifesaver when I don’t have the time to make my usual baked BBQ chicken thighs or Instant Pot BBQ chicken. The slow cooker does most of the work for me, but still yields juicy, tender chicken slathered in rich, tangy BBQ sauce in the end. Win-win!

I’ll typically serve the shredded chicken over a leafy green salad or grain bowl for filling weekday lunches. Or, for dinner, I’ll stuff it into slider buns for mouthwatering BBQ chicken sliders! In my eyes, there is no wrong way to enjoy barbecue sauce-drenched chicken.

Ingredients

Chicken – I used boneless, skinless chicken breasts because they stay juicy in the slow cooker and shred beautifully. Boneless chicken thighs would work just as well, but will take slightly longer to cook through.

BBQ sauce – Use your favorite store-bought or homemade smoky, spicy, or sweet BBQ sauce. I love using a thick, tangy sauce that clings to the shredded chicken.

Brown sugar – The sweetness from the brown sugar balances the bolder BBQ flavors. Feel free to swap in honey or maple syrup for a more natural option.

Apple cider vinegar – A small splash adds brightness and a subtle tang. If you don’t have ACV on hand, use white vinegar or a splash of lemon juice instead.

Seasonings – All you need are garlic powder and salt. You can also add a pinch of smoked paprika, onion powder, or your favorite dry rub for an extra flavor boost (see the Variations below for more on this).

This list provides further clarification on a few of the ingredients. Refer to the recipe card below for the complete list of ingredients.

Variations

  • Add a dry rub – Coat each chicken breast in your favorite BBQ dry rub before placing them in the crockpot and pouring the sauce over top.
  • Smoky or spicy kick – Add a dash of liquid smoke or a sprinkle of smoked paprika to the sauce to mimic that straight-off-the-grill taste. You could also stir in hot sauce, cayenne pepper, or crushed red pepper flakes to turn up the heat.
  • Add vegetables – Toss in thinly sliced onions or bell peppers before cooking. They’ll soften in the sauce, adding extra flavor and body.

How to Make BBQ Chicken in a Slow Cooker

Step 1: Layer the chicken. Place the chicken breasts in an even layer on the bottom of your crockpot.

Step 2: Add the sauce. Whisk the BBQ sauce, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, garlic powder, and salt together in a small bowl. Pour the sauce over the chicken.

Step 3: Cook. Place the lid on top and cook the chicken on high for 2 to 3 hours or low for 6 to 7 hours or until the chicken is tender and easily pulls apart.

Step 4: Shred and serve. Use two forks to shred the chicken in the slow cooker. Stir it well to coat each piece in the BBQ sauce, then serve and enjoy!

Erin’s Tips and Tricks

  • Keep the chicken in the pot while you shred it. This is not only easier but also gives the chicken more of an opportunity to soak up that flavorful sauce.
  • For a thicker BBQ sauce, remove the lid from the crockpot and let the sauce simmer on high for 10 to 15 minutes after shredding the meat.
  • Are you serving shredded BBQ chicken at a potluck or party? No need to take it out of the pot. Just switch the slow cooker to “warm,” and it’ll stay juicy for hours.

My Pro Tip

Recipe Tip

You’ll know the chicken breasts are fully cooked and ready to shred when they reach an internal temperature of 165°F. The meat should pull apart easily at this point. If you’re still unsure, use a meat thermometer to measure the internal temperature.

Slow Cooker BBQ Chicken FAQs

Can I cook frozen chicken in the slow cooker?

I recommend thawing the chicken in the fridge overnight before adding it to your slow cooker for food safety reasons. Starting with frozen chicken can cause uneven cooking and keep it in the “danger zone” temperature range for too long.

Can I double this recipe?

You can definitely double the ingredients to make a larger batch. Just make sure your slow cooker isn’t more than about two-thirds full so the chicken cooks evenly. Also note that you may need to add 30 to 60 minutes of extra cooking time.

Serving Suggestions

This BBQ pulled chicken is so versatile! When I’m not piling it into a sandwich or on a slider, I’ll toss it over fresh greens for a hearty BBQ chicken salad. It can even be served as a delicious topping on baked potatoes, tacos, and grain bowls.

When serving it as the main protein for dinner, I like to pair it with Southern-style sides. Creamy coleslaw, corn on the cob, and mac and cheese are a few of my favorites because they complement the rich, tangy flavor of the BBQ sauce perfectly.

Storage

Refrigerator: Transfer the leftovers to an airtight container and refrigerate them for up to 4 days.

Freezer: The leftovers should also freeze well for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.

Reheat: Reheat the chicken on the stovetop or in the microwave, adding a splash of BBQ sauce or chicken broth to revive the sauce.

This Slow Cooker Orange Chicken is a takeout-inspired favorite that’s easy to make at home! The crockpot does most of the work and leaves you with a saucy and satisfying meal for busy weeknights or meal prep.

orange chicken and broccoli topped on a bed of white rice in a bowl.

Why you’ll love this family favorite recipe!

  • Hands-off: The slow cooker takes care of all the cooking for you!
  • Family favorite: Not only is this easy recipe perfect for busy weeknights, but also kids and adults alike can’t resist the juicy pieces of chicken covered in the homemade orange sauce.
  • Tastes like takeout: This crockpot orange chicken has the same zippy, punchy flavors as the orange chicken on your takeout order.

Orange chicken is one of my favorite Chinese-American meals that I make at least a few times a month. I can never get enough of the juicy chicken bites glazed in the citrusy and tangy orange sauce.

Just like my Instant Pot orange chicken, this Slow Cooker Orange Chicken recipe takes most of the work out of this family favorite meal. The 10-minute prep is easy, and the crockpot does the rest! Start this recipe mid-day and by dinnertime, you’ll have a citrusy and satisfying meal that gives the takeout classic a run for its money.

broccoli florets and chicken pieces in orange sauce in a slow cooker.

Ingredients

Chicken – This recipe works with boneless, skinless chicken breasts or chicken thighs. Whichever you choose, remember to dice the chicken into 1-inch pieces before adding them to the crockpot to help them cook evenly and quickly.

Orange juice – I recommend using freshly squeezed orange juice. That way, you can zest the oranges and give the sauce a bright burst of orange flavor.

Soy sauce – Or use tamari to make this recipe gluten-free.

Broccoli – I like serving orange chicken with broccoli florets because they add some extra nourishment and are easy to cook in the slow cooker with the chicken and orange sauce. Feel free to omit the broccoli or swap it with the veggies of your choice.

Cornstarch – It’s mixed with water to create a thickening slurry for the sauce. Without it, the sauce will be too loose and won’t stick to the chicken. Arrowroot starch should work as a substitute.

This list is to provide further clarification on a few of the ingredients. See recipe card below for the full ingredient list.

How to make orange chicken in a slow cooker

Step 1: Make orange sauce. Whisk the orange sauce ingredients (except the cornstarch and water) together in a glass measuring cup. Pour it over the chicken in the slow cooker.

Step 2: Cook. Cook on HIGH for 2 to 3 hours. Add the broccoli to the pot during the last 30 minutes, then whisk the cornstarch and water together and pour the slurry into the slow cooker.

Step 3: Serve. Continue cooking until the sauce has thickened and the broccoli is tender-crisp. Serve the orange chicken over rice and top with green onion. Enjoy!

Tips and FAQs

  • Frozen chicken breasts or thighs work here, but you’ll need to thaw them fully first.
  • You can deepen the flavors here by marinating the chicken pieces in a mix of soy sauce, fresh orange juice, garlic, and a pinch of sugar for 30 minutes before adding them to the slow cooker.
  • Take the orange flavors up a notch by stirring a generous spoonful of orange marmalade into the sauce.
  • Feel free to swap the broccoli for cauliflower florets, green beans, or edamame.

My Pro Tip

Recipe Tip

You really can’t beat the bright, citrusy pop from freshly squeezed orange juice here! Ditch the store-bought cartons of orange juice and use a citrus reamer or juicer to squeeze the juice from 1 or 2 Valencia oranges instead.

Is orange chicken spicy?

The sriracha sauce does give the orange sauce a subtle warmth, but the spice is very mild. If you’re craving more heat, increase the sriracha to 3 or 4 tablespoons.

How should I serve orange chicken?

Top the saucy chicken pieces and broccoli over a bed of fluffy white jasmine rice, brown rice, or coconut rice. Or, for a lighter spin, serve with cooked quinoa or cauliflower rice instead. I like orange chicken with sliced green onions on top, but you can also add fresh cilantro and toasted sesame seeds.

Storage

Refrigerator: Once the leftovers are cool to room temperature, transfer them to an airtight container and refrigerate them for 3 to 4 days.

Freezer: You can also freeze leftover orange chicken for up to 3 months. Thaw them in the fridge overnight before reheating.

Reheating: Microwave individual servings or reheat the whole batch in a 350ºF oven for 15 minutes or until it’s warmed through.

Make the best chicken breasts every time with this easy Slow Cooker Chicken Breast recipe. The lightly seasoned and ultra-juicy chicken is perfect for simple dinners, meal prep, or freezing for later. All you need are pantry staples and 5 minutes of prep!

chicken breasts cooking in a slow cooker.

Can you believe that cooking the juiciest, most flavorful chicken barely takes any effort? That’s the magic of the slow cooker, baby!

Be it legs, thighs, or breasts, this hands-off technique doesn’t require any searing or babysitting. Just place the seasoned cut of chicken of your choice in the pot, pour in some broth, and let the crockpot work its magic. It goes from raw to juicy, tender perfection in just a matter of hours.

For this Slow Cooker Chicken Breast recipe, I kept things as simple as possible to help you keep it on repeat for weeknight dinners and meal prep. Thanks to a flavorful Italian seasoning blend and chicken broth, the breasts come out of the crockpot with mouthwatering flavors and fall-apart tender meat every time. Whether you’re serving chicken breasts tonight or freezing them for later, this method is a keeper!

Recipe features

  • Say goodbye to dried-out and sad chicken breasts! Cooking them in a crockpot is not only easy but also keeps them tender and moist.
  • Well-balanced flavors thanks to simple seasonings and pantry staple ingredients. Or, customize the flavor using your favorite spice blends or marinades.
  • Great for meal prep and freezer-friendly! Just like classic shredded chicken, you can make a big batch once and freeze extras for quick, protein-packed meals in the future.

Ingredients

ingredients for a Slow Cooker Chicken Breast recipe in individual bowls and plates.

Chicken breasts – Boneless, skinless chicken breasts cook up juicy and tender in the crockpot with hardly any effort on your part! I typically use 6- to 8-ounce breasts for even cooking. If you prefer dark meat, chicken thighs will work as a substitute. You can learn how it’s done in my slow cooker chicken thighs recipe.

Seasonings – A blend of Italian seasoning, paprika (sweet or smoked), garlic powder, and coarse salt is my go-to. Together, these simple seasonings infuse the meat with bold, savory flavors.

Chicken broth – The best liquid that creates a steamy, flavorful environment for slow cooking. Both store-bought broth and homemade broth will work just fine. If you’re planning on shredding the chicken for meal prep, add an extra splash of broth to keep it juicy when you pull it apart.

Butter – Scattering bits of butter (or ghee for Whole30) over the chicken before slow cooking gives you extra-rich and juicy results. It’s optional, but if you’re not avoiding dairy, I highly recommend it!

Instructions

Step 1: Season.  Brush both sides of the chicken breasts with olive oil, then season them with Italian seasoning, paprika, garlic powder, and salt.

Step 2: Assemble in the slow cooker. Pour chicken broth into the slow cooker. Nestle the seasoned chicken breasts into the broth and add a few small pats of butter on top.

Step 4: Rest, slice (or shred), and serve. Once cooked, let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before slicing or shredding.

Tips and FAQs

  • It’s okay if the breasts overlap slightly in the slow cooker (especially if you’re cooking more than four). Just avoid stacking them too high to ensure even cooking.
  • Use an instant-read meat thermometer to check for doneness. The thickest part of the meat will register 165°F when it’s done cooking.
  • Save the cooking liquid to make chicken gravy! After cooking, pour the juices into a small saucepan. Whisk in 1 tablespoon of cornstarch, then cook over medium heat, whisking constantly until the gravy has thickened. If it doesn’t thicken right away, turn the heat up slightly and continue whisking until it reaches your desired consistency.

Tip

The time it takes to cook chicken breasts in the slow cooker depends on your slow cooker and the size of the chicken breasts. On HIGH, cook for 2 to 3 hours; on LOW, cook for 3 to 4 hours. Remember that thinner chicken breasts will cook slightly faster.

Variations

There are two easy ways to play with this recipe: (1) Change the seasonings, and (2) add a marinade. Here are the details:

  • Seasonings – I love Italian-seasoned chicken breasts for a simple crockpot chicken dinner, but if that isn’t your thing, use another seasoning blend you like. Taco seasoning, dry BBQ rub, Cajun spice, blackened seasoning, curry powder, jerk seasoning, lemon pepper, or an all-purpose chicken seasoning are all good fits.
  • Marinades – This crockpot chicken recipe also plays well with marinades. This Greek chicken marinade is a personal favorite of mine, but you could also use a balsamic vinaigrette or a teriyaki marinade. If you’re using a marinade, pour it directly over the chicken before slow cooking and reduce or skip the added broth.

Serving suggestions

Now THIS is the fun part… Deciding where and how to indulge in your slow-cooked chicken! I have plenty of ideas that will easily excite your taste buds:

Do you slow-cook chicken breasts on high or low?

Up to you! Both methods yield juicy results, but the low setting has more wiggle room if your timing is flexible. If your slow cooker runs hot or your chicken breasts are on the thinner side, start checking for doneness early.

Can I cook frozen chicken breasts in a slow cooker?

It isn’t generally recommended to cook frozen chicken breasts in a slow cooker. This puts them at risk of spending too much time at unsafe temperatures before reaching a safe internal temperature of 165°F. For food safety concerns, always thaw the chicken overnight in the fridge before cooking.

Can you overcook chicken breasts in a slow cooker?

Yes. Even in a slow cooker, chicken breasts can dry out if left too long, especially on high heat. Try not to go over the recommended time range unless your chicken breasts are particularly thick.

Storage

Refrigerator: Let the chicken cool completely before transferring it to an airtight container. It will keep for up to 4 days in the fridge.

Freezer: Once cooled, slice or shred the chicken and freeze it in an airtight container or freezer-safe bag for up to 3 months. Thaw it overnight in the refrigerator before gently reheating it in a skillet or microwave with a splash of broth to keep it juicy.
